Case 196
Withers Injury
This is a 25 year old Quarter Horse Gelding that was bitten by another horse at the end of the withers
10 days prior to arriving at Step Ahead Farm. The wound started bleeding the day before arrival.
Treatment 4-24-2008 through 9-15-2008
Day 1 - Skin covering the injury
is almost completely torn off.
We suspect there is an
anaerobe active in the wound
site.
Day 7 - The torn covering skin has
sloughed off, and ligament tissue
is dissolving, possibly due to an
anaerobe and poor blood supply.
There are pockets on each side of
the wound.
Day 19 - Nice granulation bed, however, there is double
the amount of discharge the wound had been producing.
Day 23 - Still has a discharge
coming from the front portion of
the wound. The pockets along the
side have closed. The pockets at the
front of the wound are
approximately 3 inches deep.
Day 30 - Discharge has stopped, epithelial border has begun to grow.
Granulation bed is smooth across the entire wound. The horse went
home at this point for the owner to continue treatment.
Day 55 - The horse was returned to Step Ahead Farm, as a
drainage at the withers had begun, with minor swelling. We
suspect there is still an anerobe in the forward section, and
the owner decided to leave the horse at Step Ahead for
further treatment.
Day 67 - Anerobe appears to have
been stopped, wound is healing well.
Day 97 - Wound is completely healed, expect that the hair
will continue to grow in leaving only very minor scarring.
